Kaffarah for Broken Fast

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 183)

The following are the three acceptable forms of atonement for a broken fast during Ramadan:

  • Fasting for two consecutive lunar months without interruption. If interrupted, the fasts must restart.
  • Freeing a Muslim enslaved person; although traditional slavery no longer exists, donations towards freeing modern-day slaves are an option.
  • If the above methods are not feasible and you are unable to fast, you can fulfill Kaffarah by feeding 60 people.

Kaffarah for Broken Oath

“Allah will not hold you responsible for your unintentional oaths, but He will hold you responsible for your deliberate oaths. The expiation for breaking such an oath is to feed ten needy people with an average of what you feed your family, or to clothe them, or to free a slave. Whoever cannot afford that must fast for three days.”

(Surah Al-Ma'idah: 89)

The following are the three acceptable forms of atonement for a broken oath:

  • Fasting consecutively for three days without interruption. If interrupted, the fasts must restart.
  • Donating towards the freedom of a Muslim enslaved person, if feasible.
  • If the above methods are not feasible, you can fulfill Kaffarah by feeding or clothing 10 needy individuals.
